Have you found yourself in financial trouble? Are you thinking you need to do something to repair your credit report? Have you come the realization that you are barely keeping things together and you need some help? Many people feel it's bad to ask for help, or they are concerned about the cost of hiring a credit counseling service.

There are a lot of people who feel uncomfortable turning over control of their financial situation. Many people feel they are the only person who can repair their credit and are hesitant to trust someone else to do it. Most people have this view because they believe no one will ever be as good an advocate for fixing their problem. The good news is that using a credit counseling service is different than hiring a credit repair service.

When you hire a credit repair service you turn over all control of the situation to the company you hire. When you use a credit counselor you are still the person in control of the situation. With a credit counseling service you will have the guidance of a professional who will guide you in the proper direction you need to go to repair your credit. This will allow you full control of your repair efforts, while having the expert knowledge to provide you the proper techniques.

A counselor can help you understand your financial situation with a much wider point of view. They can help you organize you finances and prepare a financial plan that will put you on track to correcting the problems you have found yourself in. They will be able to help you get an exact understanding of your expenses and develop a system to keep you on track so you don't get into trouble again.

Credit counselors will be able to help you develop reasonable and manageable payment plan so you can pay off your debts. A payment plan that is well organized will allow you to slowly clear your negative debts from your credit report. A well organized plan will also help you avoid getting into any further problems with your finances.

The biggest mistake most people make in trying to move get themselves out of trouble is to borrow money from one source to repay another. This amounts to the old saying "robbing Peter to pay Paul." Doing so is not a plan to get yourself out of trouble. It is at best a quick fix that still does not address the underlying problem, and does not establish a plan to rid you of the debt.

While using a credit counseling service can be a be of benefit, you also need to keep a close eye on them. Many of the services tout themselves as being free or of very low cost. This is only half true. A free service means you are not going to have to pay them to work on your behalf. We have all heard the saying, "Nothing in life is free." This saying applies here as well. The "free" credit counseling services are actually being paid by the people you owe money to.

They are working on your behalf saying they will negotiate a lower payoff for you, or better terms. They then get a commission from the creditor you owe money to for helping recover as much debt as possible. Make sure you understand that last sentence. The impact this has on how they will conduct themselves while working for you is huge. This means that they are financially motivated to work more for the creditor than they are you. After all, the more money they help the creditor recover, the larger their commission.

Another thing very few people know about credit counseling services is that you can do everything they can yourself. In my book "Credit Secrets Exposed - An Attorneys Guide To Credit Repair" I talk about just this. I explain how credit counseling services work, and how you can do exactly what they do. This is a guide written by a friend of mine who is a credit repair attorney. He charges $2,000 for his service, and this book reveals his techniques and includes the forms he uses.
